Facebook changed its name to Meta last October. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he wants the world to know his company as a metaverse, not just as Facebook, but the public does not seem to like the new name of the company. Despite the new name, controversies still plague the company.
Instagram and Facebook may have to be shut down
In a statement, Meta said that if it is not allowed to share its users’ data with other countries, it will have to cease its operations. Meta has stated that its services have been affected by the non-sharing of user data. The company shows ads based on user data.
Meta has stated clearly that it will accept the new terms of 2022, but if the data transfer facility is not available, it will have to stop many of its services, including Facebook and Instagram. We want to inform you that Meta, until now, was storing data for European users on American servers, but under the new terms, data sharing is prohibited.
The bad case regarding data server
Meta has informed the Securities and Exchange Commission that it will have to discontinue its services in Europe unless a new framework is developed for the service as soon as possible. According to EU law, users’ data should not reside in Europe, yet META requests permission to share users’ data. Zuckerberg wants the data of European users to be stored on American servers as well.
Formerly, European data was transferred to US servers under the Privacy Shield Act, but that law was abolished by the European Court in July 2020. Meta also uses Standard Contractual Clauses to store European users’ data on US servers, but this is also under investigation in several countries, including Europe.
