Shiva had gone unconscious
The gods and demons churned the ocean to get nectar, according to Shiva Mahapuran. Many things came out of this churning and were divided between the deities and asuras. During the churning of the ocean, Halahal, poison, emerged. To save the entire creation, Lord Shiva took it by the throat at the behest of the gods. The Puranas mention that it was only due to this that Bholenath’s throat turned blue. Shiva was then named Neelkanth. When the poison reached Lord Shiva’s brain, he became distraught and fell unconscious. The deities were left in a state of doubt because of Shiva’s condition.
