This year’s Laureus World Sports Awards are being judged by a panel composed of more than 1300 sports journalists and broadcasters. The Laureus World Sports Academy will announce the winners in April after voting by the world’s largest sports jury.

Neeraj Chopra has been shortlisted for the Laureus World Sports Award for Indian spearhead who won gold in Tokyo Olympics. Footballer Robert Levlandoski from Poland, tennis player Novak Djokovic from Serbia, and Australian Ashley Batti have also been nominated. A panel of more than 1300 prominent sports journalists and broadcasters shortlisted players and teams in seven categories for the Laureus World Sports Awards this year. Laureus World Sports Academy will announce the winners in April after voting by the world’s largest sports jury.

Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the spear throw competition in Tokyo. Those are the other two Indian players who won gold in the Olympic Games. Previously, Abhinav Bindra had won gold in the air rifle competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the age of 23, Neeraj Chopra had made his Olympic debut. In his second attempt, he won gold with a throw of 87.58 meters.

Neeraj Chopra is the third Indian to be nominated for a Laureus Award. The greatest wrestler Vinesh Fogat and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar were nominated in 2019. Sachin Tendulkar won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award 2000-2020. India’s cricket team won the 2011 World Cup with Tendulkar leading them to victory. The players picked up their teammates on the shoulder and rotated at the stadium.
