The Central Government appointed Senior Rocket Scientist S.K. S Somnath as the new head of the Indian Space Research Organization on Wednesday.
S.K. Somnath, a senior rocket scientist, was appointed as the new leader of the Indian Space Research Organization on Wednesday. We would like to inform you that Somnath is currently the director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center. In accordance with a Ministry of Personnel order, he was appointed for three years. During his early career, Somnath led the integration of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). He served as the Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission for three years. Afterwards, he assumed the position of Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) on January 22, 2018.

Mr. Somnath is one of the country’s best rocket scientists and aerospace engineers. Scientists under his guidance are working on the most powerful rocket India has ever built, the GSLV Mk-3. Somnath started his career by working on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
Who is S Somnath?
S Somanath studied mechanical engineering at TKM College of Engineering, Quillon, University of Kerala, after completing his pre-degree program at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, Kerala. After this, he graduated from IISc with a master’s degree in aerospace engineering. His area of specialization was rocket dynamics and control. Moreover, he has been instrumental in three successful GSLV missions using indigenous cryogenic stages and eleven successful PSLV missions using a liquid propellant stage. He joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) in 1985. He was the GSLV Mk-III Project Director from June 2010 to 2014. Till November 2014, he was also Deputy Director of VSSC’s ‘Structure’ Unit and Deputy Director of VSSC’s ‘Propulsion and Space Ordinance Unit’.
