Corona threatens to undermine the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) in its 15th season. BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is also serious about this. On Saturday (January 22), the board met with all the franchisees. In the virtual meeting, it was agreed that all the matches of the tournament can take place in Mumbai and Pune, two cities in Maharashtra. Dubai is also an option.
PTI quoted BCCI sources as saying either March 27 (Sunday) or April 2 (Saturday) are possible dates for the IPL 15th season. The Lodha Committee recommends there should be a 14-day gap between an international match and the IPL. The last T20 match of the three-match series between India and Sri Lanka will be played on March 18. The tournament can start on April 2 in such a situation, but most of the franchises have agreed on March 27. The board can make a final decision on February 20.
The board is making every effort to hold the tournament in India itself. Maharashtra is the reason for this. The first match is likely to take place in Mumbai. Along with N. Srinivasan of Chennai Super Kings, Shah Rukh Khan of Kolkata Knight Riders, Preity Zinta of Punjab Kings, and Parth Jindal of Delhi Capitals, other owners attended the meeting.
How come Mumbai and Pune were chosen?
There are four grounds in Mumbai and Pune that are close to each other, so events can be held there easily. In addition to Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, matches can be played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (Braborne Stadium), and DY Patil Stadium. During these times, spectators will not be allowed into the stadium. Pune and Mumbai matches will not require players to travel to the airport. Players can travel by bus. The distance from outsiders will be maintained.
What happened to the UAE, South Africa, and Sri Lanka?
If the problem with Kovid-19 increases, IPL can be played in UAE once again. Due to the matches being held in UAE in two seasons, the board will feel at ease there. During the T20 World Cup held in the UAE last year, the toss has also been discussed as having affected results. Could we go there? The board has informed all franchisees that no final decision has been made regarding the UAE. This is only an option.
There are few members who are ready to go to South Africa. While the BCCI wants the tournament held in India regardless of the team owners’ wishes, the team owners are open to moving to South Africa. As an alternative, Sri Lanka was also mentioned in the media, but it was not discussed at the meeting.
The auction has 1214 players registered
On Saturday, the IPL released an official announcement regarding the players who had registered to participate in the auction. The IPL auction will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. As a result, the board has once again informed all franchisees that the auction dates will not change. A total of 1214 players from all over the world have registered. Between 350 and 400 players will be shortlisted. The IPL announced that 1214 players (896 Indians and 318 foreigners) have registered for the 2022 auction.
